is polk audio home speakers the best?

Q: does polk audio speakers for home theatre is a right fit?
Will onkyo tx sr 805 with polk audio RM 6880 speaker system will make a decent home theatre set up?

A: Polk are decent speakers and will work well for home theater.

But there are HUNDREDS of other brands out there. Some are a lot more accurate & detailed. But you are pushing $2,000 per speaker to get the increased accuracy.

Also - newbies often post:

"For $500 - which of these 3 speakers are the best?"

and a fight ensues with no truthful answer.

Dont be this Newb.

Speakers have 'flavor'. What I like and what other posters here like wont be the same. And there is no good way to measure/rate speakers from best to worst.

The safest advice I can give you is that you should take a CD (Not a DVD movie) and try and listen to several speakers, including the Polks you are considering. It should be a favorite CD. If the Polks make your familar music sound good - put them on your short list to buy.

Then leave the store.

How does impedance relate to sound quality in home audio speakers?
[2006-12-11 23:33:40]
MTX 15 inch PA speakers

I am in need of new speakers for my new home theater system, however as tech savy as I am, speakers are not my forte. The current speakers I run are 8 Ohm impedance, 150W, 91DB Sound pressure, with 36Hz-22Khz range. These are Onkyo Fusion AVs. I need a good pair of slim line speakers, and I have found a few that I like however I am not sure how they compare with my current set.

Can somone please explain to me which of these statistics should be lower, and which should be higher for optimal sound quality.

Thanks!

You want your speakers to handle your system's output power, so you'll need at least 150W speakers.

The 91 dB sound pressure is an indication of the efficiency of the speakers. Higher is more efficient, lower is less efficient. Remember that dB is logarithmic, so a 3 dB change is a factor of 2 (88 dB uses twice the power to sound as loud as your 91 dB speakers).

A key spec of the frequency range was left out, and that is the variation from one frequency to another -- i.e. +/- 3 dB. Ideally, you'd like +/- 0 dB so all frequencies would sound the same with the same power input, but that's not going to happen, so most spec how close they come to the ideal. A speaker with +/- 0.5 dB across the frequency range will sound far more accurate that one that is +/- 3 dB (remember that 3 dB is a factor of 2).

The wider and flatter (+/- 0dB) the frequency range, the better.

Impedance by itself generally doesn't...

Cisco Introduces Wireless Home Audio Solutions

The thing about setting up your home for better audio quality would be to address the cables and wires where you strategically place components and speakers.

Similar to networking solutions prior to the Wi-Fi networking solutions, home entertainment setups can now enjoy better placement with lesser wiring exposure through Cisco’s new wireless home audio over an existing 802.11 Wi-Fi network.

An added feature is that it also offers an iPod dock that allows access to the iPod from any of the base stations on network.

The Linksys by Cisco Wireless Home Audio system will consist of half a dozen components, ranging from a miniature boom box called the Conductor–with integrated speakers, a CD player, and an LCD touch screen–to a handheld Controller that has a touch screen for managing all the other system components.

Wireless audio IC supports home, portable apps EETimes.com

SAN FRANCISCO—Kleer Inc., a maker of chips for wireless audio, has announced a new release of its flagship KLR3012 wireless audio module, which contains new technology to support both portable audio devices and home audio equipment.

According to Kleer (Cupertino, Calif.), the KLR3012 version 1.9 enables consumer electronics brands to standardize on a single wireless radio platform for both portable and home audio applications.

Kleer executives offer a vision of audio sources wirelessly linked throughout the home using Kleer technology. Using audio headphones, a user could wander throughout the home and seamlessly switch between different sources such as stereos, televisions, PCs and other devices, they say. The technology also enables speakers to be wirelessly linked to audio sources.

This wireless home audio vision is still evolving, according to Brent Allen, director of product marketing at Kleer. The company's mixed-singal ICs are shipping in headphones and other products

Why are Car and Home Audio Speakers so different?
[2008-01-05 21:03:56]
Old TV used as shelf for center channel

I have two infinity floor standing speakers, each has an 8" low range driver. Im curious why the sound, both spl and range, are much like that of my JL 12" w6v2 subwoofer in my car. Ok maybe not spl, ive never experienced my sub putting out more than 1/2 power. They are so different, the 12" being massive, both by competent companies. Why is it that from appearance they are so different, yet in sound they are so much the same?

Essentially, the larger the speaker, the more efficient it is.

A small 4" speaker when fed with a 100Hz tone will sound very much quieter then a 8" or 12", because the bigger speakers cones can vibrate more air particles then the smaller 4" or so speaker can.

Also, bear in mind that the car sub is designed as a sub, most likely with a tuned and ported box, to make the sub box's resonate frequency somewhere in the middle of the bass frequencies - say 60-100Hz or so - making them most efficient(read: loud) at those low bass frequencies, plus car subs are normally driven harder then house subs, to produce more thumping bass from a relatively small sub box.

Your house speakers are more wide-band, in that they tend to try to emphasize all frequencies - bass, vocals and treble.

They get good sound, but require a larger volume box to produce the goods across the whole audio spectrum.

Home audio speakers, are smaller dual woofers better than a single large one?

I'm looking to upgrade my stereo system with a new pair of 3-way speakers, everything I see seems to use a dual woofer configuration. My current speakers use a single 12 inch woofer with two horns, one for the midrange, and one for the high end. my main concern is not going "Backwards" in relationship to what I already have, "Rock" solid bass.

they are using 2 smaller speakers vs one larger because they are faster , quicker (sound - cleaner) more acurate .
