WITH 'AVATAR' causing a hullaballoo at the box office and at the Golden Globes, it seems only fitting to hop on the sci-fi bandwagon and highlight two spacey new DVD releases, "Pandorum" and "Defying Gravity."
"Pandorum," on DVD and Blu-ray, is a combo of sci-fi, mystery, mind games and horror. I watched it the other night, and it gave me my first nightmare in years.
During a claustrophobic opening that moves at the speed of inertia, two astronauts awaken in a dark, jittery spaceship with no memory of who they are, where they are or why Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings are singing "Pants on the Ground."
No, wait a minute: That's what woke me from my nightmare.
Back on the spaceship, the suspense picks up when the corporal (Ben Foster of "The Messenger") starts exploring the huge craft as the lieutenant (Dennis Quaid) stays behind to push pretty buttons and guide him through tight, spooky chambers where fast, creepy things with big appetites go bumpety-bump in the dark.
