Energy and Sustainability Napa Valley Register

In the early 1980s, I was in the construction trades. I was very interested in efficient construction methods, and got certifications in weatherization and solar energy. One of my favorite publications was The Mother Earth News. In my dream world, I would have a home completely off the grid. I would rely on the sun, wind, and methane for my energy sources.

The problem with this vision is that like most young people, I did not own a home where I could apply my theories. If you retrofit your rental home with makeshift solar collectors and windmill kits, your landlord is not likely to be pleased with you. Notwithstanding that point, most of this kind of equipment was (and still is) darned expensive. Just the same, I have never let go of that unrealized dream.

I have been an adult for more than thirty years now. And grown-up responsibilities have often come between me and my dream of independent living. However, I have seen enough life to experience the cyclical nature of things. I am no longer in the construction trades. The things I build now live in a virtual world. But I cannot help but notice how those alternative technologies have come back into vogue. In the early 80s, the focus for solar energy was primarily as a heat source. Photovoltaic (PV) was not ready for prime time yet, although NASA had been using this technology to power satellites for about twenty years as of that point. Since then, PV technology has become more efficient due to higher quality silicone and the development of new composite materials. On the other end of the energy spectrum, consumption, electronics have become smaller and more efficient as well. Case in point, I have a scientific calculator that I bought in 1994 that is still working fine on the same original battery. Granted, I use my computer a great deal and thus do not call on that calculator often, but that kind of lifespan for a battery powered piece of equipment would have been unheard of thirty years ago. So we are coming to a sort of nexus where the technology to produce electricity from sustainable sources has become more efficient and reliable, and the components that consume that energy are also more efficient.

I have a 10-Digit scientific calculator and when I type in a decimal number like 1.6 it rounds it off to 2. Is there anyway i can stop it from doing that?
I have a 10-Digit scientific calculator (from staples) It rounds off decimal numbers e.g. if i type something like 3.14 x 6 it rounds off 3.14 to 3 giving a rounded off answer(which isnt very good for me)Í dont have the manual anymore and it didnt round off number before.
Any ideas how i can keep it from rounding off the numbers?

Read the user's guide to your calculator.
Evidently, you need to adjust the
value for the number of digits you want to have
displayed in an answer. Most such calculators
keep 10-15 digits for numbers that are entered
and used in a calculation, but allow you to decide
how many significant digits you want to have displayed.
